1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

We made it!! We had our 1 year anniversary on February 20. Everyone says that the first year is the hardest. For us, it was pretty easy. We kept saying that if that was the hardest year, bring on the rest! This year our anniversary was on a Sunday. We also had Stake Conference that day which meant that the day before was the adult evening session. What’s more, I had President’s Day off but Mike did not. That left us with Saturday afternoon to celebrate by going out. We went to Cheesecake Factory for lunch and then went to the new Chronicles of Narnia movie (it is very good by the way, we both recommend it). Sunday was a cold, rainy day so we stayed inside and played games and watched a movie. We finally got to eat our much anticipated wedding cake top!! Our fridge is so small that the small box that the cake top was in took up half of our freezer. We had a mini celebration simply at the fact that we doubled our freezer space. I don’t know if I was more excited about actually having our first anniversary or getting more freezer space. Oh, the pathetic joys of a poor college student.

INTERNSHIP AND JOB

Since Mike was laid-off in Oct he has been looking for a job or internship in a business setting to give him more experience with what he is studying in school. He learned of a class that offers school credit and a possible internship. The class gives options of possible places to apply for an internship and as long as you get one you can get school credit for it. Mike got a marketing internship with the town of Gilbert. He is really excited and loves what he does. He is hoping to use this experience to get more internships over the summer and next fall. I will be finishing my internship in March. Even though I won’t be graduating until May I am not taking any classes right now besides the internship. In January, I decided to start looking for and applying for jobs since many times it takes months to find a job. After I finish my internship and defend my thesis I am eligible to sit for the RD exam to become a Registered Dietitian. Many people say not to apply for jobs until you have passed the exam because you are more marketable as an RD instead of just RD eligible. I applied anyway. A couple of weeks after I had applied for several jobs I was invited to interview with Mountain Park Health Center. After an interview and later a tour of the facility I was offered the job! I start the Monday after my internship ends. I will be working with a majority of Hispanics and youth who are diabetic. The ironic part about it is that it is only a mile away from where my sister Karen works! We are both very grateful and excited for the opportunities and experiences that lay ahead.

CHRISTMAS 2010

Christmas time is such a wonderful time. It is a time when so many people’s thoughts and hearts are turned to the Savior in celebration of His birth. Every year the Mesa Temple puts up lights and displays to show the birth of the Savior. They have musical concerts to invite the spirit. Living two blocks from the temple meant that we got to see the lights every night on our way home. We also went to walk around the temple grounds several times with my family and Mike’s family.

This Christmas we went up to Utah to spend time with my family. Four of my sisters were planning on spending Christmas in Utah so we had plenty of company. We watched the weather for our drive up there to make sure that we wouldn’t get caught in a snow storm. The predicted weather said that there was going to be a little rain at the higher elevations but later in the afternoon/evening. Needless to say, the weather in Utah is very unpredictable. We got rain, that turned to snow, that was even icy in areas. I drove since Mike had never driven in snow before. He sat in the passenger seat looking out the windows and making comments about the amazing snow. It was like a little kid who had seen snow for the first time. He had been in snow before but not as much as we drove through.

While in Utah, we went to a BYU basketball game with my mom and two sisters. We also went to see an art display of the Savior by Carl Bloch. It was very moving and made the Christmas spirit so strong. We also spent time playing games, watching movies, and being permanently wrapped up in a blanket because it was so cold! The snow that was there when we got to Utah slowly melted away in a couple of days. We watched the weather again before we left to drive back to Arizona. There was a snow storm that was scheduled to hit in the late afternoon/evening. Again, needless to say, Utah weather is unpredictable. We woke up to find 4” of snow already on the ground and more coming down with no let up. We decided to delay our departure for a day and spent that day playing in the snow and sledding. I used that day to teach Mike how to drive in the snow. The next day the slushy snow had turned to ice. Mike practiced his driving abilities in the snow. It took us 13 hours to get home instead of 10. We both enjoyed our time in Utah and with the snow, but we were both so glad to get back to Arizona and no snow.
